Bonus point win opens exiles account.

London Cornish recorded their first win of the season as local rivals Teddington were beaten 47-22 at The REMPF this afternoon.

Teddington started stongly and kept Cornish in their own half for much of the opening seven or eight minutes, but once the home side finally broke out, they took the lead thanks to a Luke Spells penalty. However, three minutes later, Teddington were level with a penalty of their own.

The Exiles gradually inched their way into the match, aided by their forwards, who caused Teddington no end of problems all afternoon. From the first rolling maul, Chris Anstey touched down and Spells converted. Just four minutes later, Cornish were in again, when following a great build up, Will Carew-Gibbs dotted down and Spells added the extras. After another successful penalty was kicked by Spells, Cornish ended the half with a third try. A massive rolling maul down the right hand side saw Teddington driven backwards at an alarming rate, with Mike Bond grounding the ball. The conversion attempt missed, but Cornish were 25-3 up at the break.

The second half started with Cornish in utter domination. A stolen line-out saw another attack, which was stopped illegally by Teddington's Stu Ridler, who was sin-binned. Spells stepped up to kick the penalty. Four minutes later, the continuing pressure resulted in the fourth try which sealed the bonus point. Cornish kicked a penalty to touch, and from the resulting line-out, another maul sent Teddington backwards 10m and Mike Bond was over for his second try. Teddington then had a flurry of possession which resulted in Chris Bentley going over, and the conversion was good. The Exiles responded by launching a searing break from Matt Hakes who sent Luke Spells away. Mark Osei-Tutu received the ball and took it up the middle before playing in Harry Somers who took it into a maul. The ball emerged, but was snaffled by the visitors, and Chris Dickson sprinted clear; Cornish stopped him, but not without the concession of a penalty. The resulting move saw Teddington recycle and Fillipe Saldanha ran in to score. The conversion was good, and the visitors were creeping back into it at 33-17.

Thankfully, Cornish stepped it up once more, and two tries in five minutes were the icing on the cake. First, from a maul, Mark Osei-Tutu grounded the ball for his third try in two games, before an outstanding solo effort from Matt Hakes who went on a 25m run which dazzled the Teddington defence to score under the posts, and Spells converted. It was Teddington who finished the game on the front foot thanks to Cornish conceding a number of penalties, which led to a third "Antlers" score. The final exchanges saw the visitors dangerously close to claiming an inconceivable bonus point for four tries, but Cornish did enough to prevent this.

Six tries was a fabulous return from the afternoon, and with a combination of powerful forward play and sparkling running rugby, there was lots to take from this performance.

Incredibly, National 3 London outfit CS Rugby couldn't field a 2nd XV and conceded the game on the Friday afternoon leaving the 2s with no game; the Choughs went down 24-5 at Rosslyn Park IV in the Middx Merit Table Div 1, and the Dukes lost to Economicals in a friendly.
